Tragedy leads to air bag crusade
Article Abstract:
Attorney Robert Sanders founded the Parents' Coalition for Air Bag Warnings after his daughter, Alison, was killed by air bag impact in a 15mph accident. The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the accidents should not have resulted in Alison's injury or death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Nov 1996 granted the organization's request that air bag risk warnings appear on the dashboards of all new vehicles. This will take effect in Feb 1997. Also in Nov, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors announced plans to mail such warnings to their 22 mil customers whose cars already have air bags.

Government settles case on nuke plant 'taking.' (Oak Ridge nuclear weapons plant)
Article Abstract:
The federal government has settled for $290,000 a case in which two Tennessee property owners claimed that pollution of their property by the Oak Ridge nuclear power plant constituted a temporary taking for which they deserved compensation. Atomic weapons production by the federal government has mainly given rise to traditional tort actions. The takings case in the US Claims Court got around the obstacles to tort suits against the federal government. The US Senate will vote in spr 1996 on a bill making takings cases easier to pursue.

Time for Supreme Court to mop up a mess
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has gained a much-needed opportunity to clarify takings law by granting certiorari in Suitum v. Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. The narrow issue of the case is whether a landowner can be made to sell development rights for a fraction of what the property is worth to show that the government has taken the land for all practical purposes. The case presents the court with an opportunity to make takings law accord with economic reality and regulation practices for real estate development.
