What the members think; expectations and priorities solicited through an in-depth survey of the ABA membership

Article Abstract:

A telephone survey of 806 randomly selected ABA members was conducted to determine members' attitudes towards the association, their fellow lawyers and the American system of justice. The survey showed the largest proportion of members to be between ages 30 and 39, one-fourth women, one-fourth not in private practice, and most in small or mid-sized firms or solo practice. Most gave broad priorities such as the promotion of social justice and outreach to non-lawyers for the ABA. Most had mixed feelings about their fellow lawyers but positive feelings about the ABA.
