Wanna get ABA's nod? Just call the man with a proven record
Article Abstract:
Law-school startups that hire former law school dean and current consultant Anthony J Santoro seem to have the edge in getting organized and winning ABA approval. With his help, Roger Williams College opened a law school in 18 months and won approval two years later, a path Chapman University seems to be following, again with Santoro's aid. Massachusetts School of Law has criticized the ABA's approval standards and process, and officials there suggest approval is more a matter of inside connections than of serving the student.

Compliance with the Investment Adviser Supervision Coordination Act, which shifted regulation of many financial advisers to the states, has proven complex
Article Abstract:
The Investment Adviser Supervision Coordination Act of 1996 simplified compliance procedures for national firms, but state laws regulating individual advisers are more complex. The legislation reallocated federal and state responsibilities for the regulation of the 20,000 advisory firms that do business in the country. In general, federal regulation governs larger advisers who do national money management activities, while state regulation is for small advisers with more regional businesses.

Re-education
Article Abstract:
The US Justice Dept's consent decree regarding the American Bar Assn's accreditation process will produce needed changes but encourages law school proliferation at a time of overcrowding in the profession. The ABA's accreditation requirements forced law-school salaries higher than market forces required, and deemphasized innovations such as clinical studies. They also gave academic elements undue weight relative to instruction.
