Workers on the wrong side of the track: down the backstretch at Arlington International Racecourse
Article Abstract:
An estimated 1,500 employees at the Arlington International Racecourse in Illinois live in slum-like conditions in an area of the facility known as the back stretch. Most of the concrete 12 by 12 foot rooms have no phone jacks or kitchens, and resemble closely the racing stalls in which horses are kept. A dysentery outbreak occured in 1994. No improvements have been made to the backstretch by track owner Richard L. Duchossois in the 1990s without such improvements being a condition of receiving a permit or a political favor.

Is free trade enslaving Mexican workers?
Article Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has not helped the Mexican economy and worsened the living conditions in Mexico. NAFTA has allowed US companies to exploit cheaper labor by opening factories in Mexico and undersell Mexican retailers with exported goods. A free trade agreement between developing and developed countries has never helped the economy in the developing nation. Although NAFTA has created jobs in Mexico the economy remains depressed and unemployment remains high.

Management's soft side
Article Abstract:
The ability to inspire people and lead a team is the greatest asset a person in a management position can have. The hard facts of business, including accounting, engineering and other qualitative issues, mean little if management cannot inspire people to synthesize information, communicate and get along. People-skills will allow one to be successful in all aspects of life and work productively with people from all walks of life.
