Service - based vs. facility- based competition in local access networks
Article Abstract:
The potential for service-based competition deterring or delaying facility-based competition is analyzed. The issue is examined by building on a formal study, where an incumbent and an entrant competed for providing high-bandwidth services. When an incumbent faces an effective threat of facility-based competition, it can strategically delay facility-based entry by providing attractive terms of access by virtue of a replacement effect, which can have an impact on entrant's choice of technology.
