Analysis tool: Routine story rescued from mundane as Census numbers add subject depth
Article Abstract:
Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) is considered as the best method for using Census data where most of the information collected by the Census is published in a series of tables organized by topic. The PUMS database is sample of individual Census forms collected by the government, with names and addresses deleted to protect the privacy of Census participants.

Article Abstract:
By crossing a database of home care aids with one of criminals, reporters at The Record, a NJ newspaper, discovered that the state was licensing individuals unfit for the positions they were filling, as background checks were not mandatory. Convictions included stealing valuables from patients' homes, to neglect and life endangerment.

PUMS: up-close sampling can reveal the bigger story
Article Abstract:
The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS), a recently released batch of 2000 census, provides a set of responses for each individual by removing names and addresses for protecting privacy. It allows to create a table based on variable on the census form, which is different from any regular census.
