Court opens abortion permission appeals
Article Abstract:
The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that court records involving minors who were denied permission to have abortions without parental consent and appealed may be made public, but the identities of the minors must be protected. A newspaper sued for access, arguing that complete closure of the records violated the state's constitutional guarantee to court access, that laws applying to juvenile court proceedings did not apply to the state's Courts of Appeal, and protecting the minors' identities satisfied the US Supreme Court's requirements regarding Ohio's abortion laws. The court agreed.

States try to open records on suits, keep sex-crime victims' names secret
Article Abstract:
Several states are considering legislation which would open court records that have been sealed under secrecy orders or seal records for the protection of victims. California and Michigan have introduced legislation to open records from settled products liability cases, which have prevented the public from learning about defective products. Colorado, Oklahoma and Washington are considering legislation to prevent the release of the names and other information of child sexual abuse or rape victims.
