Court shuts door on right to discover and correct personal electronic data
Article Abstract:
The US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled in Henke v. United States Department of Commerce that the plaintiff did not have a right to access Commerce and National Science Foundation information under the Privacy Act because the database was not being used to keep records on her. Henke sought information about the grants denied to her company. The agencies conceded that those records could be obtained by searching their database for her name, but the Court found that agencies do not have an obligation to release all the information that can be found with an individual's name.

Girl's death leads to legislative action
Article Abstract:
The death of 6-year-old Eliza Izquierdo at the hands of her mother has prompted New York lawmakers to introduce changes in the laws governing confidentiality in child welfare cases. The Child Welfare Administration had been informed repeatedly of Eliza's mother's abuse, but confidentiality has been shielding the agency from closer scrutiny. The proposed changes in the law would require annual reports from child welfare agencies and would make additional information available in certain circumstances.
