Disclosure of police discipline records uneven: courts in Massachusetts, Ohio allow access; California says no
Article Abstract:
Decisions in California, Ohio and Massachusetts reached contrasting conclusions on the scope of public access to police discipline records. A California court ruled that a local paper could not access records because of California discovery laws. The Ohio Supreme Court affirmed a prior ruling that all internal investigation records are not automatically exempt from disclosure laws. The high court in Massachusetts ruled that a reporter should be given access to records of police misconduct investigations.
