Courts back refusal to release Hoffa files
Article Abstract:
There have been two US Court of Appeals cases denying the release of records in the government's investigation of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa's 1975 disappearance. The FBI cited the pending nature of the investigation as a reason not to release records. In Dickerson v. Department of Justice, a reporter for the Detroit Free Press was denied access to the records. In Crancer v. Department of Justice, Hoffa's daughter was denied access. The court ruled the FBI did not even have to provide an index of the documents in support of the law enforcement exemption.

High court finds no privilege in airport expansion records
Article Abstract:
The Illinois Supreme Court, in Illinois ex rel. Birkett v. City of Chicago, denied that a deliberative process privilege must be found under the state's Freedom of Information Act (FOI). A deliberative process privilege seeks to promote candor in confidential government communications by protecting them from disclosure. However, the Court found that such a privilege would undermine FOI's primary purpose of giving the public access to government information.
