Evolving guidelines, risks: electronic storage of reporters' notes
Article Abstract:
Reporters create information on a variety of electronic devices such as PDAs, digital audio recorders and cameras as well as computers, which is communicated through e-mail and related attachments. Journalist should be aware of court decision setting guidelines for retention of electronic records both prior to and after litigation ensues and the legal consequences of failing to preserve them.

FOIA denial study for IRE conference shows privacy cited more than security
Article Abstract:
According to a study done for the IRE Annual Conference, federal agencies are increasingly using claims of privacy when they deny requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). National security claims were asserted in only about 1 percent of all denials of access to federal documents and records.

Electronic records threaten FOIA
Article Abstract:
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in virtually every state and the federal FOIA has few elements in common. An agency is not required to create a new document in response to a FOIA request, but instead the government must only produce what it already has.
