Exile, Conrad, and "la difference essentielle des races."
Article Abstract:
A study of the work of Joseph Conrad can play a valuable role in considering historical issues of nationality and space. Particular attention should be given to the story 'Amy Foster,' which deals with an eastern European central character but is set in the southeast of the UK. It raises significant questions about national and ethnic identity. Most importantly, it shows exile as signifying cultural terror beyond the limits of speech and identity.
