House committees bar C-SPAN cameras

Article Abstract:

Two House of Representative committees barred C-SPAN from their hearings for what appeared to be political rather than legitimate reasons. The House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on telecommunications barred C-SPAN when working on a bill to regulate cable television, which pays C-SPAN. The House Rules Committee barred C-SPAN during a budget hearing because members thought the session would take longer if members were 'playing to the cameras.' In both cases, print media was allowed to remain and C-SPAN has objected to the committees' unequal treatment.

Coast Guard hinders access to freighter interception

Article Abstract:

The US Coast Guard in mid-Jul 1993 stopped facilitating news media coverage of the ships with illegal Chinese immigrants in international waters off California's coast. The Coast Guard gave as a reason the sensitivity of discussions with Mexico about responsibility for the aliens' repatriation. The New York Times, however, complained of a media blackout.
