Imitation nation: blackface minstrelsy and the making of African American selfhood in "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
Article Abstract:
Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and blackface minstrelsy are compared to show that both shaped black and white American identities and national tensions, and expressed American culture and racist stereotypes. It is suggested that both are culturally identical representations where the African Americans imitate and threaten white American selfhood and vice versa.
