New attorney general not shy about trampling First Amendment
Article Abstract:
U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr has approved the issuing of three subpoenas, attempting to force journalists to reveal their confidential sources. These subpoenas have been issued contrary to the 20-year-old Attorney General Guidelines, which do not allow the federal government access to confidential media information unless it is deemed essential or cannot be obtained from other sources. In spite of the Guidelines, only one of the subpoenas has been withdrawn and the other two have been upheld by the courts. Such actions threaten the constitutional status of journalists.

Press code's goal: hide public lives
Article Abstract:
British attempts to control their press from printing scandalous stories about their politicians has provided a good example of the danger of such censorship. Following a scandal involving the Heritage Secretary and a government attempt to require voluntary compliance from the press to privacy guidelines, the editor of a tabloid revealed a cabinet minister's attempt to politically smear an opponent. Trying to censor the press for privacy's sake appeared only as an attempt to cover political wrongdoing.

Chief fired over removal of paper with critical article
Article Abstract:
The San Francisco Police Commission fired Chief of Police Richard Hongisto for abuse of power following the disappearance of 4,000 copies of a free newspaper that printed an unflattering picture and article of Hongisto.
