Reno riots, Chinese coverage lead to problems
Article Abstract:
Instances of harassment against journalists occurred in the US and China during the summer and early fall of 1998. Police in Reno, NV, arrested two photographers who photographed police during a riot. A free-lance producer for CBS was detained in China by the Ministry of State Security as she left her apartment. She was questioned and detained for more than two days. Reporters for Radio Free Asia who planned to report on Pres Bill Clinton's trip to China were denied visas.

Newsgathering tort cases, such as libel, in which the plaintiffs sue not because they allege that the press printed false stories or was reckless with the truth but for harmed reputation, do not serve public interest. Such suits penalize the press for attempting to uncover fraud and other harms to the public.
