Police seize film from photo lab
Article Abstract:
A Michigan state trial judge, in In re Subpoenas to News Media Petitioners, enforced an investigative subpoena ordering a newspaper to provide the county prosecutor with photographs taken of rioters at a local university following its loss of a basketball game. The photographs obtained were posted on the Internet so rioters could be identified and prosecuted. The Judge said the Michigan press shield law was not applicable because no confidential informants were involved in the taking of photographs at a public gathering. Earlier, a freelancer's film of the riot had been seized from a photo processor.

Separation orders can keep reporters from covering trials
Article Abstract:
The separation order is discussed, a measure sometimes taken by a judge which keeps witnesses from observing a criminal trial. These orders keep reporters who have spent a great deal of time reporting on a story from continuing to know the details, and the examples given suggest how they might be overcome.

Article Abstract:
Habeas corpus petitions to prevent the jailing of reporters refusing subpoenas to testify are discussed. Chances for success with the petitions are not high and they can be complicated, so this measure should be a last resort.
