Predestination and the heresy of merit in 'Othello.'
Article Abstract:
William Shakespeare's 'Othello' questions the Calvinistic doctrine of predestination in the way its characters mistakenly believe their good deeds will save them. Othello feels his military prowess entitles him to the prize of Desdemona, but Iago's ability in persuading Othello to destroy himself argues military achievements are a weak basis for merit. Desdemona is beautiful and forgiving, but these qualities are crucial to her downfall. Showing admirable people trapped by false expectations expresses Shakespeare's skepticism about predestination.

Felt absences: the stage properties of 'Othello's' handkerchief
Article Abstract:
Desdemona's handkerchief exerts unusual power in William Shakespeare's 'Othello.' Othello sees the handkerchief as proof of Desdemona's adultery, and without that proof Iago's plots would mean nothing. The handkerchief's three appearances pull the play's six most important characters into an unavoidable tragedy. 'Othello' therefore demonstrates the near-magical significance of stage properties and how they function as objects as well as symbols.

The hybrid reformation of Shakespeare's second Henriad
Article Abstract:
Many of Shakespeare's plays involve religious matters. However, in the plays of the Second Henriad, scholars have noticed a sustained, thoughtful manner in the many critiques of Catholicism, Protestantism, and the characters who tried to reform themselves. Many are questioning whether this was a deliberate move or was it just by accident since Catholicism remained a strong force against Protestantism's contradictory route to Reformation.
