Secret deals of HMOs
Article Abstract:
Investigation by News 12 Long Island reveals that major health maintenance organizations (HMO) pay doctors to avoid referrals to their patients as this will help the HMOs to save money. The HMOs pay doctors through bonus, 'hold back' and 'Direct Risk.' Prucare (Prudential), Cigna, Choice Care and MetLife are some of HMOs which pay doctors to limit their referrals. Government officials are not interested in regulating the activities of the HMOs despite the danger that such methods can cause to the patients' lives.
