The alien in our midst: trash culture and good Americans in John Gardner's 'October Light.'
Article Abstract:
John Gardner's novel 'October Light' can be regarded as expressing some very embedded social anxieties in a literary form that did not acknowledge their presence. It is not hampered by high seriousness, and is able to look at a wide range of contemporary issues, connecting the reader with the origins of these issues in the past. At the end, the novel invites the universal gesture of man confronted with a mythic nature, turning against the social conflict it placed in its centre from the start.
