The illegal immigration of medieval drama to California
Article Abstract:
A medieval play, 'Pastorela,' is still performed in 20th century Southern California. It is a shepherds' play performed in Spanish and English language by amateurs and professionals. It was introduced to the region by Franciscan friars in 1520's Mexico, and has undergone recognizable transformations through history. The play flourished and survived throughout the southwestern US and Mexico in the first half of the 20th century.

The 16th century play 'Mariken van Nieumeghen' has an innovative dramatic style while defending orthodox Christianity against humanism. The story covers the corruption by the devil and redemption of the character Mariken. Innovations occur with character portrayals, cross referencing of characters, a play within a play and analogues to Mary Magdalene, Eve and Our Lady.

The politics of rhetoric: the 1561 Antwerp 'Landjuweel.' (Continental Medieval Drama)
Article Abstract:
The introductory and concluding material of a drama festival and competition in 1561 Antwerp, Belgium, stressed the importance of rhetoric as an exemplar of harmonious order. The festival was hosted by a chamber of rhetoric, De Violieren. The introductory material included three plays which used characters from Greek mythology.
