The novel and the Police (Gazette)
Article Abstract:
James Joyce's 'Ulysses' represents a literary assault on the repressive sexuality of bourgeois societies in the Victorian era. The passing reference to tabloids, such as the National Police Gazette, indicates Joyce's understanding of the postmodern notion of pornography, with its complex web of power, pleasure and prohibition. Joyce's use of the tabloid hardly altered the literary reaction of the readers to his works. But it helped to expose the underlying emotional appeal of tabloid journalism and the complex social and sexual interlink within it.

Gambling with gambles in "Two Gallants."(Joyce and the Police: A Special Issue)
Article Abstract:
James Joyce's 'Two Gallants' treats pornography ironically, leading to incorrect assumptions about gender and sexual exploitation. While depicting the economic deprivation and cultural disrespect inherent in prostitution, the narration exposes erroneous assumptions of pornographic literature that view sexual acts as exchangeable commodities in socially degraded markets. The narration depicts Dublin's moral degradation as a a complicit surrender to sexual predation. Joyce considered 'Two Gallants' to be one of the best stories in 'The Dubliners.'

Rounding up the usual suspects
Article Abstract:
Focusing on the policing of sexuality in Joyce's work obscures his depiction of the poverty of early 20th century Irish cities. The interpretation of the link between policing and pleasure in James Joyce's novels by a panel of essayists focuses on the themes of surveillance, self-surveillance, and perverse pleasure. However, the crucial economic aspects inherent in pornography have been overlooked and should be more explicit in this type of analysis of Joyce.
