The privacy of the novel
Article Abstract:
The word privacy is etymologically derived from the Latin word meaning deprived which has been associated with a person's lack of normal functions or participation in public office. In the 20th century, the negative meaning of privacy has been totally erased. It is perceived as a privileged condition of freedom and control. This view is especially prevalent in the Western middle-class society where privacy is also considered as a constitutional right. To many individuals, the feeling of privacy is attained when they are engrossed with the novels they are reading.

The institution of the English novel: Defoe's contribution
Article Abstract:
Daniel Defoe's novels are seen as central to the rise of the novel, but Defoe's contemporaries and critics during the 18th century ignored him as the founder of a new genre. The linear history of the novel, which links novel's origin with Defoe, was invented in the early 19th century. This approach attempts to impose a unity upon Defoe's diverse writings to make them conform to the genre of the novel. The history thus represses the heterogeneity of the discourses and forms, which contributed to the rise of the novel.

Disenchanting China: Orientalism and the aesthetics of reason in the English novel
Article Abstract:
Samuel Johnson achieved the required disenchantments of the object world in his 'Rambler 4', the new realistic novel of the eighteenth century, by resorting to the material culture of chinoiserie. The manner in which the Chinese objects moved from being decadent ornaments to everyday things in the novels of the eighteenth century including Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' is discussed.
