Article Abstract:

Natural history makes extremely popular television programming, but is also one of the industry's most expensive genres, costing as much as 700,000 pounds sterling an hour. This is prompting broadcasters to put pressure on producers to play a more active role in raising production finance. Various methods of raising funds are now being used, including pre-selling the rights to international broadcasters and investment by co-production partners.

Article Abstract:

ITV's drama line-up for autumn 1996 includes classic adaptations of 'Emma', 'Poldark', and 'Moll Flanders'. Other titles include 'Inspector Morse', 'Prime Suspect', 'Cracker' and 'Kiss and Tell'. ITV is attempting to address the issue of increasing BBC ratings and also to pre-empt the launch of Channel 5 in January 1997. ITV plans to release adaptations of Jane Eyre and Rebecca in 1997.
