French broadcaster TF1 has acquired Eurosport, but the channel is under tough competition from other sports networks and will need to secure more sports broadcasting rights to stay afloat. Eurosport's rights arrangement with the European Broadcasting Union may be challenged by other media groups such as Sky.

Among the many noteworthy events in Italian television in 2000, Cecchi Gori sold his 18% stake in Stream, a pay-TV company. Co-shareholders News Corp and Telecom Italia took advantage and raised their stake to 50%.
