Global media events in India: contests over beauty, gender and nation
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the perception of business and media professionals who staged the 1996 Miss World beauty contest in Bangalore, India, which proved to be controversial because of protests by conservative women's groups, feminist activists, religious leaders and political parties. The author finds that categories of gender and nation influenced intepretations by local cultural producers of the benefits from hosting a global media event, the selection of a slogan was negotiated between religious and gender politics as well as global beauty and fashion standards, and the desire of Third World countries to control their own globalization projects by managing their own cultural industries.

The impact of ethnicity and ethnic media on presidential voting patterns
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that ethnic political heritage has little to do with presidential voting patterns and that media impact is either unrelated to voter preference or is related to voting Republican. Results are based on an ethnics panel study that covered six national elections from 1972-1992; topics include ethnic partisanship, ethnic mass media use, and ethnic political behavior.

The media's role in immigrant adaptation: how first-year Haitians in Miami use the media
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that in Miami, Florida, Haitian radio programs are more content valuable to a Haitian immigrant's adaptation process than are Haitian newspapers. Results are based on a 1992 study, and topics discussed include Haitian media and local media in Miami, theories of immigrant adaptation, and interpersonal communication.
