Information superhighway: metaphors as midwives

Article Abstract:

There is currently a need for new metaphors to describe the new technologies being developed to assemble international communications networks in the US. Existing metaphors, such as highways and roads, will not adequately prepare us to plan for a future in which telecommunications become a primary form of human interaction. Planners should also work with the idea in mind of complementing, rather than replacing face-to-face human activity and communication.
