Paying to win

Article Abstract:

BSkyB now dominates television coverage of sporting events in the UK, having invested very heavily to acquire the rights to cover major sports. It has established a presence recently in the pay-per-view sector, and has also added a third sports channel, increasing sports coverage to around 270 hours a week for autumn 1996. Potential competitors have been unable to make a mark on BSkyB's market position, especially as it has been able to keep much of its planning secret.

Extra UK funding hits BSkyB profits

BSkyB faced entertainment programming costs of 90.9 million pounds sterling in the year to Jun 30, 1997, investing an additional 26 million pounds sterling in acquired and originated entertainment programming. This meant that the 22% rise in its pre-tax profits to 313.7 million pounds sterling was lower than anticipated. The company believes that it will derive long-term benefits from increasing investment in programming originated in the UK.
