Peter Salmon is in charge of sport at the BBC and the corporation's conscience on race issues and is fighting to keep major events and to ensure diversity. Industry opinion is that he has made a good job of sport, particularly after his torrid time as controller of BBCI, where he had to battle against budgets and the explosion of multichannel.
