Spatial dynamics and heterogeneity in the cyclicality of real wages
Article Abstract:
The impact of local and aggregate unemployment rates on the cyclicality of real wages has been studied using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. A human capital-wage model incorporating business-cycle controls was used in detecting spatial differences and heterogeneity in the cyclicality of real wages. Results indicate that real wages are strongly cyclical in both the aggregate and local cycles. However, the response to the aggregate rate is contemporaneous while a lag is observed in the response of the local rate.

The distributional shape of unemployment duration: a reply
Article Abstract:
An analysis of research which criticizes an earlier study of unemployment duration is presented. The study was criticized for its sampling stratification method and for its disregard of measurement problems associated with the Displaced Worker Survey which was referred to in the study. Analysis shows that the sampling procedure used was not in error. In addition, the distinction between unemployed and employed workers and the limits of the duration model were well established.

The distributional shape of unemployment duration: a reconsideration
Article Abstract:
Earlier studies concerning unemployment duration have presented problems of statistical inference. The application of the extended generalized gamma (EGG) distribution for measuring regression estimate sensitivity has been used under more restrictive conditions. Test results confirm that earlier parametric hazard duration models were not robust. The criterion of unemployment insurance collection affected estimation sensitivity.
