Technical change, markup, divestiture and productivity growth in the U.S. telecommunications industry

Article Abstract:

A study of the productivity growth of the US telecommunications industry from 1935 to 1987 was conducted. The analysis, which covers the pre- and post-divestiture of AT and T, resulted in the formulation of a structural model that takes into consideration the changes that occurred in both the cost and demand side of the industry. Total-factor productivity growth rate, as traditionally gauged, is shown to be a seriously biased mode of measuring technical change.

An analysis of the source and nature of technical change: the case of U.S. agriculture

Article Abstract:

The use of a nonparametric approach to study the nature of technical change, applied to US agriculture, is viable as the methodology is relatively flexible and offers useful information. However, the method is hindered by measurement problems and the absence of hypothesis testing. Private research yields larger effects in the short term and small in the longer term, while effects from public research are small in the short term and larger in the longer term.
