The status of forecasting in manufacturing firms
Article Abstract:
Important company decisions covering production planning, workforce scheduling, inventory management, purchasing, capital budgeting, and resource allocations rely on forecasts. A survey was conducted to understand the forecasting practices of manufacturing companies. Results show that forecasters depend heavily on judgmental forecasting methods made in a structured fashion in group settings. Most of the respondents said that they have problems with forecast accuracy. There are plans to implement improvements to overcome such problems.

Is the full potential of cellular manufacturing being achieved?
Article Abstract:
An assessment of cellular manufacturing (CM) is made to determine the reasons why the system hasnot lived up to its full potential. The variable results obtained when implementing current cell formation methods are traced to the lack of focus on the primary objective of CM, which is set-up reduction. For CM to be successful, implementation should be based on methods that use sequence-dependent set-up times in cell formation and schedulin. Three key principles for CM application are also proposed.

The integration of environmental issues into manufacturing: toward an interactive open-systems model
Article Abstract:
An interactive, open system framework for integrating environmental issues into manufacturing is proposed and explored. The proposed model can help develop both reactive and proactive management systems which can effectively deal with unpredicted environmental problems and help prioritize issues and allocate resources. The model is designed to fill the urgent need to link environmental management and operations management.
