Bioterrorism: Potential hazards and countermeasures

Article Abstract:

The realistic assessment of the hazardous situation created by the intentional use of the biological weapons of mass destruction and the potential technological countermeasures are discussed. Various measures to control the proliferation of biological weapons and materials, methods of detecting clandestine biological weapons programmes, strategies to deter the use of biological weapons and mechanisms to protect civilians and military personnel are necessary for countering bioterrorism.

Military strategies to combat chemical weapons attacks changed from Cold War-era plans after Saddam Hussein attacked the Kurds and following the attack on Tokyo's subway system. Modern approaches must detect in advance of the attack, respond swiftly, and manage the effects of the attack.

Biological warfare - a UK perspective

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom has two biological warfare detection systems u the vehicle-mounted Prototype Biological Detection System and the Interim Naval Biological Detection system, designed to be used on ships. The capabilities and deployment of the systems are discussed.
