Article Abstract:

China's fourth biennial Defence White Paper, and the Pentagon's eight annual report to Congress on 'Selected Military Capabilities' of the People's Republic of China provide a general account of China's security strategy, types and estimated number of weapon system in its military inventory and what systems it might feature in the future. However, administrative and operational structure of People's Liberation Army (PLA), an important determinant of military effectiveness also needs to be understood.

Asia's evolution in military affairs

Article Abstract:

The defense planners of the Asia-Pacific region are trying to modernize their armed forces in a strategic environment by exploiting the information-age Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) that has preoccupied the American counterparts in the nineties. The main reason for the Asia's military transformation is to generate advantages over potential adversaries, and the motivation for engagement in the RMA is the need to maintain a degree of interoperability with the United States armed forces.

It is widely believed that the 21st century belongs to the Asia-Pacific region with predictions that by 2050 China, USA, India and Japan will be the largest economies in the world.
