The more the merrier: reject the dismal prophets of population control
Article Abstract:
Advocates of population control in Asia who accept Thomas Malthus's forecast that rising numbers will engender poverty and famine should consider the correlation of high population density with prosperity. In Asia, as in the rest of the world, countries such as Japan that are densely populated also tend to be the wealthiest, while countries with a relatively low population density such as China tend to be poorer. Hence the true key to limiting population growth is economic well-being, which is best achieved in a free, capitalistic system that allows people to produce more than they consume.
