Poetic ability desirable but not essential
Article Abstract:
The selection of Andrew Motion as the UK's most recent poet laureate has been widely criticized, as many believe he unabashedly campaigned for the position with the publication of poems lauding Princess Diana and the previous poet laureate, Ted Hughes. The poet laureate position had undergone several changes since Hughes' death that make it more similar to the manner in which the poet laureate is treated in the US.
