M939 series truck: resolving safety issues
Article Abstract:
The Army addresses safety concerns on the M939 series 5-ton truck. The service has limited the top speed of the trucks to 40 miles per hour and cautioned drivers against panic breaking. Major General Roy E. Beauchamp said that the roll-over of the trucks occur when the driver does a panic brake, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which then goes off the road and hits an obstacle. He also said that antilock brakes will be applied starting 1999. The trucks are also being equipped with radial tires since radial tire give better traction and shorter stopping distances.
