India faced with Russian Gorshkov ultimatum

Article Abstract:

Russia has given India until the end of Jul 1999 to decide whether it will buy the 'Admiral Gorshkov,' a 35,000-ton Kive-class aircraft carrier. While a memorandum of understanding has already been signed in Dec 1998, India insists it is only an expression of 'interest,' not an 'intent' to acquire the carrier. Russia is reportedly asking for around $700 million, the cost of converting the carrier to a short takeoff platform.
