STARKSTREAK GETS SHORT SHRIFT

Article Abstract:

Shorts Missile System's Starstreak air-to-air missiles has yet to undergo side-by-side tests with Raytheon's Stinger missile. The Starstreak fires three 18-inch explosive darts that are guided by a laser beam to a target. Pentagon and Army officials promised to UK defense officials that that US would consider acquiring Starstreak missiles if the UK acquired Apache helicopters from the US. The UK has acquired 64 WAH-64 Longbow Apaches but the US still has not evaluated the Starstreak.

Article Abstract:

The US theater missile defense systems, the first of which is expected to be fielded in FY2003, will be a far more sophisticated and reliable system than the one deployed during the Gulf War. The Patriot PAC-2 system will be upgraded by the PAC-3 beginning in 2001. The US Army's Theater High- Altitude Area Defense system, seen as the primary weapon in the protection of US and allied forces as well as nearby population centers, is cheduled to be commissioned as early as 2007.
