Tritium breakthrough brings India closer to an H-bomb arsenal

Article Abstract:

Scientists working at India's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) discovered that highly enriched tritium can be extracted using heavy water as the moderator in power reactors. The new technology puts India in a position to stockpile and secure strategic materials for defence purposes in light of nuclear aspirations of Pakistan and the already-nuclear China. With a half-life of 12.3 years, tritium is a radioactive isotope that later converts into a non-radioactive form of helium.
