The use of tape decks in home sound systems dates back to the post-World War II years. Innovations of the 1950s included half-track, quarter-track and stereo recordings. In the 1960s Dolby noise-reduction was added to home decks. Tape cassettes were introduced in the 1960s.

Music-dedicated CD-recordable drives are scarce, and cost from two to four times as much as computer-based CD burners. The convenience and superior quality make the extra cost worthwhile for audiophiles. Techniques for creating a labeling a music CD are detailed.
