A blood war: black-on-black violence rages through Natal

The power struggle between the ANC and Inkatha troops resulted in the assassination of ANC leader Reggie Hadebe and was the cause of more than 2,700 deaths in 1992. Nelson Mandela said his supporters should share responsibility, but ANC rejected meetings with the enemy faction.

The 11th International Conference on AIDS, held in Vancouver, British Columbia, was marked by both hope and political controversy. Combination drug treatments using protease inhibitors show a great deal of promise, but many poor third world patients cannot afford these drugs.

A university degree was once a guarantee of a good job, but that is no longer the case. Companies are constantly downsizing, eliminating some jobs and moving others offshore. Many jobs are temporary and that trend is expected to continue.
