Iqaluit was selected to become the capital of the new territory of Nunavut. Critics charge that the town is a key distribution point for smuggled alcohol and drugs. Iqaluit Mayor Joe Kunuk acknowledges that the town has problems but describes efforts underway to solve them.

Murder in the Giant mine: Roger Warren's conviction ends the N.W.T.'s longest criminal trial

An eleven-member jury found Warren guilty of nine counts of second-degree murder in the Giant mine bombing in Yellowknife, North West Territories. Warren had confessed to the murders in Oct 1993, but later recanted his confession. He received a life sentence.
