The Apr 1998 announcement that Citicorp and Travelers Groups are merging surprised many analysts. The new company will be called Citigroup. The intent of this $140 bil merger is to pair Citicorp chairman John Reed's consumer and corporate bank with Travelers chairman Sandy Weill's money- management, insurance, stockbroking and investment-banking operations. This merger targets over a billion customers in 100 countries.

Here come the Germans

The planned acquisition of Bankers Trust by Deutsche Bank is coming on top of two other US acquisitions by German companies. It shows that as Europe prepares to launch its new currency, Euro, Germans have already taken the first step to play the global game.
