The 1996 Stanley Cup victory by the NHL's newest expansion team the Colorado Avalanche is an example of how quickly the sport has gained acceptance in the US. Although the Florida Panthers lost the Stanley Cup, their fans are enthusiastic. The NHL recently signed a $2.2-million television contract.
