Pres Clinton, in response to recent terrorist attacks signed an anti-terrorism bill in summer 1996, that imposes unilateral sanctions against foreign firms doing with Libya and Iran. Canada, the European Union and other nations condemned the bill.

A mafia hit

Sicilian Judge Giovanni Falcone was assassinated by a bomb planted by the Mafia near Palermo, Sicily. Falcone was instrumental in convicting 338 alleged Mafia members in 1987. The crime led to Italian efforts to appoint a government.
