French statesman Francois Mitterrand, the longtime leader of the Socialist Party who served as president of France during the 1980s and early 1990s, died of prostate cancer in Jan 1996 at age 79. Mitterrand's long political career included stints as a rightist, a leftist, and a pragmatic centrist.
