Kathy Lindgren was in grade school when she first joined Special Olympics, an athletic tournament for mentally challenged young people which began in 1963. Twenty-nine-year-old Lindgren has won medals for swimming, cross-country skiing, ice skating and roller skating.

Food & Hunger Hotline Dir Ellyn Rosenthal founded One City Cafe to provide on-the-job training to homeless people. With a $60,000 grant from New York City, she bought a restaurant and set up a board of chefs and restaurant professionals to design a curriculum.
