AFRICA: SHARP INCREASE IN SHIPPING COSTS
Article Abstract:
A recent maritime trade review of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development revealed that sea freight costs are increasing in developing countries, where the freight factor rose from 8.04% in 1997 to 8.06% in 1998, especially in Africa, where the freight factor in 1998 was 11.36% which, according to Paul Page marketing manager of OT Africa Line, is due to high port charges at African ports and the fall in prices of traditional African exports which has badly affected the foreign exchange reserves of governments leading to lack of investment in port facilities and infrastructure inland. However, the review showed that shipping in the developed world is getting cheaper with the fall in freight factor from 4.17% in 1997 to 4.07% in 1998.

CHINA: YABUY.COM TO SCALE DOWN ITS BUSINESS
Article Abstract:
It is learnt that failure to secure credit from bankers is the main reason that caused Yabuy.com's financial difficulties. In line with this, a Beijing-based warehouse that is owned by the Chinese online auction web site, which focuses on antiques and art items, may be closed down. Meanwhile, in January 2001, operations of Yabuy.com's administrative subsidiary based in Shanghai will be terminated. Separately, Yabuy.com is envisaging a consolidation with Eastnet.com that is an online auction entity based in China.
