AT&T bets big on a new strategy

AT and T Corp's stock has been rated a long-term buy by most analysts. The company has just completed a $1.6-bullion expenses cut, slashed 20,000 jobs and invested $124 billion on acquisitions. The recent deal to acquire MediaOne Group Inc for $58 billion and the sale of 3% stake to Microsoft Corp for $5 billion has put the company into new territory. At the closing price of $59.81 per share on May 17, 1999, the stock is trading at 32.06 times trailing earnings.

BioChem wins approval to sell hepatitis B treatment in Europe

BioChem Pharma Inc, based in Laval, Quebec, has obtained approval from the European Commission to market its Zeffix drug for chronic hepatitis B in Europe. The announcement is seen as a possible boost to BioChem's stock, after the company reported lower-than-expected sales in the second quarter of 1999. The drug is already available in several nations such as the US, Canada and South Korea and will be soon be launched in China.
